Dementia-Friendly Golf Taster Clinic Brings Joy and Connection to Southend Community
A recent golf taster clinic hosted at Garon Park Golf has highlighted the growing impact of dementia-friendly sport, as charity Fore Get Me Not Golf continues its mission to make golf accessible to all.
The welcoming session introduced attendees to golf in a relaxed, inclusive environment, with opportunities to try putting, chipping and driving at their own pace. Designed specifically for individuals living with dementia, the clinic focused on building confidence, encouraging gentle physical activity and creating meaningful social interaction.
The event was made possible through the facilities at Garon Park Golf, which is operated by the Norman Garon Trust - a long-established charity dedicated to improving community wellbeing through sport and recreation.
Founded in 1982, the Norman Garon Trust invests in and manages a wide range of sporting facilities across Southend-on-Sea, including golf, football, cricket and tennis, with a strong emphasis on accessibility and community benefit.
The Trust’s mission centres on enhancing lives through sport, supporting inclusive programmes and reinvesting in local initiatives that promote health, opportunity and social connection.
By hosting events such as this dementia-friendly golf clinic, the Trust continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating spaces where people of all abilities can participate and thrive.
Fore Get Me Not Golf, a charity dedicated to making golf accessible for people living with dementia, uses the sport as a tool for improving wellbeing. Its sessions combine physical movement, cognitive stimulation and social engagement - helping to reduce isolation while rekindling familiarity and enjoyment.
The Garon Park Golf clinic embodied this approach, with supportive coaching and encouragement ensuring every participant could take part in a way that suited them. For many, the session offered not only a new experience, but also a chance to reconnect with a sport they may have previously enjoyed.
The collaboration between Fore Get Me Not Golf and the Norman Garon Trust highlights the importance of partnerships in expanding access to inclusive sport. The Trust’s continued investment in high-quality, community-focused facilities enables charities and organisations to deliver programmes that have a lasting local impact.
Through shared values of inclusivity, wellbeing and community engagement, both organisations are helping to ensure that golf, and sport more broadly, is accessible to everyone.
Following the success of the taster clinic, Fore Get Me Not Golf aims to deliver more sessions in partnership with venues like Garon Park Golf, encouraging other clubs and organisations across the UK to adopt dementia-friendly practices.
By combining expertise, facilities and a shared commitment to inclusion, initiatives like this are proving that golf can be far more than a game - it can be a powerful force for connection, confidence and community.
